One of the most popular and immersive aspects of WoW is the creation of Guilds. Guilds consist of a collection of players who share a common goal or aspiration. World of Warcraft features an ever expanding number of Guilds due to the fact that any player is free to form one, as long as they have fellow players to join it. Guilds form the backbone of the RPG as it gives players a common purpose, and introduces a personal element to the game, bringing players together in trust and brotherhood.

Most Guilds generally revolve around a distinct faction, race or profession, as these provide the major template for players of simular interests and goals to unite. PVP (Player vs Player) realms are thick with those that center around raiding, also called end-game guilds, because raiding parties are made of very high level characters. However, there are further controversial Guilds, known as Twink Guilds. The Twink guilds employ an underhand technique of equiping low level characters with extremely potent and expensive weapons and armour, usually bought by the same players’ high level characters. This is viewed as a technique akin to cheating and is generally frowned upon by the community.

The creation of some Guilds is taken very seriously by some players. It is not uncommon for members of the same family or tightly knit friends to form exclusive Guilds, whilst other high ranking Guilds are known to charge extortionate amounts of gold for membership. Some Guilds even require prospective members to be sponsored or to ‘prove themselves’ to the Guild. Once accepted however, the Guild can open you up to a much more intimate gaming experience. Gamewise, the Guild offers partnerships and opens multiple players up to sharing information and tips throughout the realms. This sense of community is often carried over into the real world with friendships formed through online play.

Inclusion of the guilds raise the already immersive World of Warcraft to a new level entirely. Truly the sense of involvement and inclusion has never been so high in an MMORPG, and a well maintained Guild can pave the way for online friendships and a deeper sense of enjoyment.
